Woolston edges ahead in senior suburban

The fifth round of the senior suburban cricket competition ended on Saturday with Bowleys Hornby and Woolston W.M.C. each gaining outright wins.

Heathcote and Hoon Hay drew their match, as did Vistalite Sumner and Upper Riccarton.

Woolston has now edged ahead in the competition by three points over Boon Hay. Heathcote and Vistalite Sumner are equal third. At Garrick Park, Woolston declared overnight, 13 runs ahead of Southern Districts.

Batting on a good strip, Southern Districts was dismissed for 143. Alan Laurent top scored on 48 and a parttimer, Carl Siave, was not out 22. This set Woolston up for the outright win. Requiring 131 runs with 90 minutes and 20 overs in hand, Woolston’s John Fielding scored 72 and Les Robson was undefeated on 20, giving a seventh-wicket win.

At Denton Oval, Bowleys Hornby was in a similar situation, declaring overnight also, with a 17-run advantage. Opposing it, Christchurch W.M.C. scored 115 leaving the match wide open, Hornby needing 90 runs to win, which it did, losing only Bob Kerr’s wicket.

Kerr, 44, and Gary McManus on 53 not out, gave a valuable contribution. The match at Heathcote Domain did not have such a positive approach. Chasing 176, Boon Hay continued batting and went through to 128 for the loss of seven wickets before declaring. In its second innings, Heathcote scored a further 144 runs before declaring with an overall lead of 192. With 30 minutes and 20 overs in hand, Hoon Hay was always pushed to reach the target and play closed at 89 for the loss of four wickets.

Vistalite Sumner and Upper Riccarton met in the remaining match at Riccarton Domain. Batting in its second innings, after Sumner declared overnight eight runs ahead, Upper Riccarton slowly hit its 173 runs, declaring soon after afternoon tea.

This left Sumner 166 runs to win. This was out of its reach, and it struggled to 115 for seven.

The best individual effort of the day came from Dave Forrester of the Bowleys Hornby Fourth A side who scored 102 not out and took five wickets for 42 while bowling. Three hat-tricks were scored — P. Anderson, for the Bowleys Hornby fourth grade B team, P. Mahoney for Heathcote fourth A, and G. Watson for the Upper Riccarton Third A side.

Competition points: Woolston W.M.C. 52, Hoon Hay 49, Vistalite Sumner and Heathcote 42 each, Bowleys Hornby 24, Upper Riccarton 17, Southern Districts 15, Christchurch W.M.C. 4.
