The first Italian scientific expedition'to Antarctica arrived at Lyttelton yesterday on its way to the Ice.

The 21 Italian; scientists and five Norwegian guides have travelledito New Zealand from Genoa in the Polar Queens a 1496-ton sealer. They are due to leave for the Ross Sea about Tuesday, depending on the weather in Antarctica.

The Polar Queen will be loaded with two helicopters and scientific equipment while at Lyttelton.

The expedition’s logistic manager, Mr Joem Fortun, a Norwegian, said the expedition was the first of six planned by the Italians. They intend eventually to build a base at Terra Nova Bay, in the Ross Sea. The scientists on this trip will be based aboard the Polar Queen, which will be anchored off Terra Nova Bay. They plan to travel to and from shore in helicopters, and will erect temporary portable sheds in the

bay. The expedition is planned for six to eight weeks, depending on ice conditions. The scientists will study aspects of Antarctic geology, metallurgy, oceanography, and wildlife. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is helping with preparations for the expedition.
