Charlie Rhodes to retire
The secretary-manager of the Victory Park Board, Mr Charlie Rhodes, will retire at the end of the year. Mr Rhodes has been responsible for the running of Lancaster Park for a very active five years in the park’s history since his appointment in 1981. Big changes at the ground have included improving facilities for the public, and the complete reconstruction of the wicket block and regrading of the oval. More advertising, the hustle and bustle of Canterbury’s record-equalling Ranfurly Shield tenure, the almost annual major one-day cricket fixtures have also made for a busier time at the park.
The chairman of the Victory Park, Board, Mr Tony Gemmill, said the board had been fortunate during this time to have had the services of Mr Rhodes, who had done his job in a workmanlike manner. “The smoothness of operations at the park has been largely due to the interest and dedication shown by Mr Rhodes
throughout a busy and often difficult period,” said Mr Gemmill.
The new secretary-mana-ger will be Mr Doug Pearson, who retired last year as General Manager and Town Clerk to the Timaru City Council. Mr Pearson had earlier spent 35 years as a career officer in local government, and has been involved in the administration of several sports.
