Space head stands down

NZPA-AP Washington The President of the United States, Mr Ronald Reagan, had reluctantly agreed to relieve the space agency’s administrator, James Beggs, of his duties pending disposition of charges that he had defrauded the Government while an official of General Dynamics Corporation, the White House said yesterday. A Presidential spokesman, Larry Speakes, said that Mr Beggs had asked Mr Reagan to be granted a leave of absence and the President had agreed. It was not immediately clear whether Mr Beggs would continue to be paid pending trial on the felony indictment that was announced on Tuesday.
