Australian criticism of N.Z. stand

NZPA-AAP Sydney The continuing antinuclear stance by the New Zealand Government and its threat to the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty featured in editorials in Australian newspapers yesterday. In Brisbane, the “Daily Sun” said it was essential that the Australian Foreign Minister, Mr Bill Hayden, made it clear that Australia opposed New Zealand’s planned laws banning American nuclear-armed ships from its ports. The Hobart “Mercury” said that in spite of the forthright opinion of Mr Hayden condemning the proposed New Zealand move, the Lange Government had listened politely and then told Australia exactly what it intended to do. “Even though,” it said “it will spell the virtual deathknell of the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty."
