Move to prevent rumours

The Lyttelton Harbour Board intends to keep Lyttelton residents better informed of its development plans for the western inner harbour after receiving a letter from Mrs Ruth Thackwell, of ■ Godley Quay. Mrs Thackwell asked seven questions of the board about the use the area would be put to, and suggested that residents be kept better informed -to prevent rumours from spreadThe board’s general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire, said at the board’s

meeting yesterday that the area would be used for cargo handling and container operations. The area would be sealed, eliminating the dust problem, and the board would landscape it as far as was possible. The developments would mean longer hours of commercial activity in the area, although it would probably not extend beyond 10 p.m. Copies of the correspondence and reply were sent to the Lyttelton Residents’ Association, the Lyttelton Borough Council, and the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Hercus. r

Road widening The National Roads Board has removed a 5m : road-widening designation it imposed on Norwich Quay 1 in the early 19705. The board was told that I traffic flow on Norwich Quay, which is part of State > highway 1 was considerably ’ less than on the main road between Sockburn and Hornby, which had only re- ■ cently been widened. The Roads Board’s policy 1 was to relinquish designa- ! tions which were not required in the foreseeable .future.
