Tips from The •Sportsman•

Every punter in the country, it seemed, was following SOUTHERN RAIDER and Colin de Filippi at Orari last Saturday and for a good part of the race horse and driver seemed to be following most of the others. But they came right when the pressure went on and the horse won so well he looks set to repeat in the first at Methven on Saturday. It’s an open-looking field and everyone knows winners at Methven can pay odds longer than the home straight but Southern Raider has always looked promising and now he has the winning habit he could retain it.

That might not be the end of the de Filippi luck either. In the Thomas he produces a smart looking maiden MICHELLE BROMAC who is well worth following in her first few starts judging by her trial effort during the week. And STAR LADY is in her element running in staying races on grass tracks. She would not be any forlorn chance in the McTigue handicap, the big-pace of the day. Colin will probably get plenty of support for his trotter Racey Tracey too but GAME GREG could make some appeal in that event the last leg of the treble.

The Game Pride gelding has been a bit disap-

pointing for a while now but he keeps hinting at returning to his best and he is a fine stayer on his day. If ever a horse deserved to live up to his name it is CONSOLATION. The Mark Smolenskitrained three year old has gone well at Methven before but he has had little luck in his recent racing. He will get few better chances than in the McKendry Pace tomorrow. And it might not be the first Smolensk! victory for the day if it does come about. Mark’s sister Jill has a rather underrated horse called THORNLEA which keeps rattling home late and looking an early winner. He is partial to grass tracks and if the breaks come at the right time he’ll get the money this time. Another grass tracker might provide the quinella. His name is HINDYN and while he looked a bit out of his depth running mobiles at Addington it should be a different ball game back on grass. The mystery horse this week runs in the ninth at Wairio.

Judging by her mother’s name she was a happy American but they seem to-have named this foal after an airport somewhere in Britain.
