Final ski race rounds

Rounds four and five of the New World Supermarket South Island water ski racing series this week-end should provide spectators with of some of the fastest racing seen in New Zealand. The glamour event, the open class, using the highly modified V 6 outboard tow boats, will be run for the first time under world rules. These extend the race to one hour’s duration and also give skiers the chance to reach 136 km/h.

Brent Morgan, the New Zealand champion, from Wellington, is expected to do well after winning the event in the Australian Bridge to Bridge event last week-end.

Morgan and the Christchurch skier, John Scott, have both recorded wins this season, but motor failure by Morgan’s Tenessee and Scott’s Carlsberg Beer Bullet have cost them a win apiece, allowing Chris Mulvey (Christchurch) and Darren Randle (Nelson) a series points advantage. The sub-junior class is led by Kylie Morris, the current New Zealand champion, from Rebecca Aitcheson, Daniel Charteris and Jason Dick. Brendon Charteris will be seeking a win over the Nelson skier, Jimmy White, in the junior class, while Jane Williams is hoping to retain her lead over the current New Zealand champion, Joanne-Adams, in the women’s B class. Debbie Bain of Christchurch holds a decisive lead in women’s A class but she will encounter Sue Rhodes, the New Zealand champion, who is having her first competition this season.
