Bridge to Japan

NZPA-Reuter Sydney Japan’s open team has clinched the twenty-eighth Far East Bridge Federation (FEBF) championships, in spite of losing its final match to New Zealand, the first round front-runner.

Thailand finished second, managing a tie and 15 victory points (vps) against Hong Kong, and Chinese Taipei was third after taking only 4 vps from Australia.

New Zealandearned 16vps against Japan’s 14 to give it a fourth place tie with Australia. Australia won the women’s championship. Final open team standings (totals include fines for slow play, in brackets, assessed in early rounds of play): Japan 337.5 vps (1.5), Thailand 326, Chinese Taipei 313 (2), New Zealand (3) and Australia (4) 307 each, Indonesia 286, Hong Kong 267, Macao 180.5 (9.5), Philippines 149.5 (2.5), and Singapore 147. Women’s standings: Australia 363, Japan 301, Chinese Taipei 296, Hong Kong 287, China 276, New Zealand 269, Indonesia 246, Singapore 244, Thailand 217 and Malaysia 160.
