Computer buffs look to satellite link

NZJN Tokyo Personal computer buffs in New Zealand will soon be conferring with their Japan-
ese counterparts via satel-lite-linked telephone lines. The New Zealand Post Office and its Japanese overseas equivalent, K.D.D., will sign a telecommunications agreement in midDecember and open the service soon after.
A K.D.D. spokesman said the service, known as Venus-P, would link both countries faster and more efficiently with a broader range of facilities than before.
“This will be a big advance in Japan-New Zealand communications,” he said.
The new link-up will be part of Japan’s Venus telecommunications network round the world. Venus-P is designed to transmit and receive data between computer and computer, computer and data terminal, or mutual data terminal equipment via a digital network by a packet-switched system. The packet-switched sys-
tern is a kind of exchange in which data are divided into blocks (packets) and stored temporarily in the satellite network, then transmitted. Speed of Venus-P is up to 9600 bits per second. K.D.D. says speeds of up to 48 kilo bits per second will be available in the near future.
Charges will be computed in proportion to the actual quantity of data in segments.
“Venus-P is economical when you have a small quantity of data and many overseas parties to communicate with,” the spokesman said.
