992 One of the most intriguing competitors in the Broadbank New Zealand Open is an Australian, Steve Elkington, who hails from Wollongong. A friend of the young New Zealand professional, Bruce Soulsby, Elkington went to the United States for the 1980 Doug Sanders International Junior event at Woodlands, Texas, which he won.

He played for the University of Houston from 1982 to 1985, leading national championship teams in 1984 and 1985. In 1984 Elkington was the NCAA runner-up at Bear Creek Golf World in

Houston, with a 13-under par score of 275.

He was a first team allAmerican in 1984 and 1985, and scored individual wins in the 1984 and 1985 Southwest Conference championships, the 1985 Henry Kornberg Invitational and the 1985 All American Collegiate International.

Since turning professional in July this year, Elkington’s best results have included eleventh placing in the Dutch Open, fourteenth in the Quad Cities, seventh in the Benson and Hedges tournament and sixth in the Milwaukee Open.
