Rent increases
Sir,—W. Richards only presents one side of the story on Govern-ment-owned motorway houses. In my experience, some rents can be as low as 850 a week for a threebedroomed house, so even after the proposed 100 per cent increase, these houses would still be cheaper than renting on the open market. Mr Richards may well say "There goes Christmas.” Conversely, I would say, “All your Christmases come at once” if you are one of the lucky occupiers of these cheap homes. Why should the taxpayer, through the generosity of the landlord (the Lands and Survey Department) subsidise these people with peppercorn rents, so that they can save to enjoy an exclusive cheap buying option on the homes they occupy? Just who are these privileged people? Solo mothers? Struggling, low, single-income families? I think not. Bringing these rents in line with the market rate has been long overdue. — Yours, etc., PATRICK J. BARBER. December 4, 1985.
