Doctors recruited
PA Auckland The Auckland Hospital Board says it has recruited 63 junior doctors from more than 15 countries.
The deputy superintend-ent-in-chief, Dr Guy Hawley, said yesterday that he believed board services could “just” be maintained with the 216 available doctors until the recruits from abroad arrived early next year.
The extra staff were needed so that new rosters aimed at restricting young doctors to 72 hours a week and 16 consecutively could be implemented. The recruits will come from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, India,, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
