Mr McLay: I won’t lose my nerve
NZPA political reporter Wellington The Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, said last evening that he would not lose his nerve because of a few public opinion polls. He was referring to the lessening of his popularity in a recent public opinion poll and increased pressure on his retaining the leadership of the National Party. “My colleagues are not going to lose their nerve,” he said. The current policy direction had the strong endorsement of the party’s
annual conference and caucus. . . . ;■ ■■■■■ “I am looking to the future and I am certainly not losing my nerve about the direction I have defined,” Mr McLay said. He said that in the year of his leadership he redefined National Party direction. “It is an important process. Bearing in mind the previous direction we have been on it is a fairly painful process for a political party to have to go through,” he said.
