N.Z. pilot killed in P.N.G.
NZPA-AAP Port Moresby A New Zealand pilot and his passenger were killed when a light aircraft crashed in the mountainous highlands of Papua New Guinea late last week. The pilot was Paul Francis Summerfield, aged 34, married, with four children, formerly
of Lyttelton. The sole passenger was
Miss Diana Feeney, of Australia.
They died in the crash last Thursday afternoon, the
police announced yesterday. Their bodies are still on the crash site which searchers found late on Friday. Attempts to retrieve them have been hampered by bad weather. The spokesman said efforts would be made again yesterday. The Cessna aircraft had been flying from the town of Mount Hagen to a mission station at Chungribu, a 35 minute flight. Poor weather prevented air searchers checking the area until Friday.
Mr Summerfield was a missionary pilot with the Missionary Aviation Fellowship, based at Mount Hagen. “Miss Feeney was dean of the Theological College of the Churches of Christ of New South Wales in Carlington, Sydney, according to friends.
Mr Summerfield joined the Missionary Aviation Fellowship in 1978.
