Blarney Fair too good

From

ALEX McMillan

Greymouth Blarney Fair provided the highlight of the day’s racing at Omoto yesterday when she returned an above average performance to win the 1400 m L. A. Griffiths Handicap, the first leg of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double. The “Ned” Thistolltrained four-year-old was settled well back in the early running by the stable apprentice, Jackie Jamieson, a grand-daughter of the mare’s Riccarton trainer, and was conceding the pacemaking Mighty Million a

handy start 1000 m from home.

Jamieson was, however, riding to instructions and wben she asked the daughter of Blarney Kiss and Fair Frances for an effort she responded immediately and dashed to a clear lead with 500 m to run. The outcome was never in doubt from that stage and Blarney Fair, recording her fifth career win yesterday, had an advantage of two lengths at the line, over Beau Magnum, with Bo Diddley just shading Sound Note for third.

Blarney Fair had re-

turned an improver’s effort to finish fifth behind In the Glen in the Miss Scenicland Stakes at Hokitika last week when placed at a distinct disadvantage under the weight-for-age conditions of that event.

Blarney Fair was confidently expected to appreciate the winter-like conditions that prevailed yesterday more than many of her rivals, yet still returned her supporters a surprisingly generous win dividend of $7.80.

Zara’s Star completed the T.A.B. double for Riccarton stables and also gave Grant

Davison his fourth riding success for the day when she proved too strong for her rivals in the Messenger and Son Handicap. The Tom Lalor-trained daughter of Watelse sprinted to a clear lead 400 m out in the 1400 m event and was untroubled to withstand a strong late finish from the hot favourite, Sugar Plum Lady, by a length and a half, with Vita’s Bouquet a fair third.

The win was the third for Zara’a Star from her last four starts and she should not be difficult to place to advantage in coming weeks.
