The Wizard

Sir,—The Wizard of Christchurch is always telling us that what he says is rubbish. He will often add the rider that that statement itself may be rubbish, too. The solution to this contretemps is that the statement, “don’t believe everything I say” is a cop-out, or safety clause, to protect himself against his detractors and those who may wish to sue him in the courts. In fact, people do believe what he says, even though, being normal people, they cannot make much sense out of it. As a matter of fact, he often says, much the same sort of thing as the Socialist Party of Great Britain says, yet he denies knowledge of its existence.—Yours, etc., TED HICKS. November 29, 1985.
