Four Chch companies among design finalists

Four Christchurch companies are among six finalists in this year’s Prince Philip Award for industrial design. The finalists for the award, which is administered by the New Zealand Industrial Design Council, will have to wait until early next year to discover who has won. The Duke of Edinburgh will himself announce the winner and present the award, when he and the Queen visit New Zealand in February. The finalists were selected in Wellington recently bv a six-member

judging panel, headed by the chairman of the New Zealand Industrial Design Council, Mr Doug Walker. The Christchurch finalists are PDL Industries, Ltd, which makes hoseproof electrical switches and plugs, designed by a company team led by Mr David Cook; G. W. Streat, Ltd, which makes a computerised wool-drying control unit, designed by Dr John Christie; Austral Standard Cables Pty, Ltd, which makes slotted core-type optical fibre cables, designed by a company team led by Mr Norman Farrell; and Tait Electronics, Ltd, which

makes P 500 series radio telephones, designed by a company team led by Mr Ray Vickers.

The others are Technident Industries, Ltd, of Wellington, which makes an inhalation machine designed by a company team led by Mr lan Dixon; and the Woolrest Corporation, Ltd, of Hamilton, which makes the Woolrest sleeper, designed by Mr Leonard Sims and Mr Bruce Weeks. The Prince Philip Award was established in 1981 to promote good industrial design. It is open to any New Zealand-designed product available to the public.
