Innings in vain
Despite a patient innings by Jon Preston, the Canterbury under-20 cricket team lost a one-day game against a Canterbury XI at Hagley oval yesterday. The match was to sharpen the under-20 side in preparation for its participation in the Braibin Cup tournament, which begins later this week. Preston proved his readiness for the coming contest by batting through the under-20 side’s innings for
an unbeaten 62 at the declaration. However, Bob Carter gave the opposing side a solid start, and a confident Dave Farrant hit his team through to a three-wicket victory. Scores: Canterbury XI, 139.7 (Carter 33, Farrant 32 n. 0.; David Aitken 3/55, Richard Petrie 1/ 13, Mark Hastings 1/8) beat under-20s, 135/7 decl. (Preston 62 n. 0.; Andrew Nuttall 4/17, Farrant. 1/25, Steve Hawker 1/ 11).
