Canty shooting title retained by Pottinger

Steady shooting over all three distances enabled lan Pottinger, of Christchurch, to retain his Canterbury smallbore title at the Burnett Range, McLeans Island, yesterday. The New Zealand representative’s scoring was reliable over the 50-metre and 50 and 100-yard ranges, enabling him to finish with a score of 985.14, edging out the Ashburton marksman, John Fleming, who carded 98423.

Competitors had two 30shot matches at 50 metres on Saturday and Pottinger made his mark in the second turn on the mound, when he shot 297, the best in that round, to give him a two-shot cushion over Fleming and the. Timaru man, Lindsay Smith.

Steven Townshend, from Waimate, took an early advantage scoring 297 in the first 30 shots, but slipped In his second round, with 291.
