Howell wins yachting trials

Last year’s P class champion, Mark Howell, gained a perfect score to win the Sanders and Tanner Cup P class yachting trials held at Lyttelton on Saturday. Sailing Aphrodite, Howell held an unassailable lead going into the final two races of the series.

The first race of the day produced a surprise winner when Allistair Rolands skippering in his first year in P class, sailed off to a good

lead, and won by one and a half minutes from second placegetter, Howell. The last race came down to a dour struggle between Howell, and Dean Lamb in Prime Time with Howell just taking line honours and the series.

Howell is the sole Canterbury representative for the national P class championships which are to be held at Tauranga between January 2 and 10.
