Noble Note for famous treble?
By
J. J. BOYLE
Noble Note went one step closer to a notable treble for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting by winning the Churchill Stakes at Riccarton yesterday. The Oxford-owned, Ric-carton-trained Noble Bijou, gelding is now winner of 11 races on his home course. His tenth was in the Jockey Club Handicap last Saturday.
His mission on Saturday will be the weight-for-age Canterbury Gold Cup, in which he was second to Reingard last year. “I saw some good horses like Show Gate and Commissionaire putting wins together at our cup meeting, and it would be a great thrill if our horse could follow the same path,” Noble Note’s breeder and part-owner, Mr Richard
Johnson, said after his six-year-old gave Mishare 45kg and a beating by half a neck yesterday. Noble Note Will be stepping up to 2000 m on Saturday after his back-to-back victories at the metric mile, but his trainer, John Bourne, feels confident the gelding is ready for a longer trip. If he goes well on Saturday Noble Note will be prepared for the' Avondale Gold Cup, which will be his first test beyond 2000 m. Page Boy, trying for his second successive win in the race, found top weight of 58kg a little beyond him, although he battled bravely to save third from Vrinsk, which finished doggedly wider on the track. French Polish tired to fifth after leading briefly up the straight.
