Broodmare award to Cashmere pony

HORSE

TALK

The winner of the Canterbury pony broodmare of the year award for 1984-85 is Rockvale Queen, owned by Mrs Jeanette Brown, of Cashmere.

Her nominated progeny, Ataahua Princess Royal, is by the imported English pony sire, Keston St Christopher, and won the competition for her dam with a total of 20 first placings. In second place, with 16 wins to her progeny’s credit is Bustle, owned by Miss C. Howell, of West Melton. The progeny is Trumpington Hawkeye, by Sahara. Pinelea Summer Folly, owned by Mesdames Barbie Heard and Ann Archdale, of Halswell. The progeny, Mr Folly, by Apsley Aladdins Legend, gained nine wins. • • ♦

Mr Folly, a striking liver chestnut, 12.3-hand stallion, bred at the Kirkwood Riding pony stud by Mesdames Barbie Heard and Ann Archdale, won the major award of his career, the champion ridden pony stallion at the Melbourne Royal Show in September. Now a six-year-old, Mr Folly, by Apsley Aladdins Legend from Pinelea Summer Folly, was sold to Australia as

a yearling colt and each year has gone from strength to strength. Since February, 1984, he has had six led pony stallion championships from as many shows, six ridden pony stallions and two supremes, including the supreme of show

at the Australian Riding Pony Show in Sydney in October, 1984. At this year’s Riding Pony Show in Sydney, Mr Folly will have two of his progeny entered, one being prepared by Vince Corvi, and one by the Egan family of the Makari Stud. Also at the Makari Stud are Miss Folly, a full sister to Mr Folly, and Kirkwood Shiraz, an Aladdins Last-Gay Lark filly which went over last May. Climaxing a very successful year for this small broodmare stud is the sale of a weanling colt, Kirkwood Woodruff, by Rosevean Lone Eagle (imp) from Ohoka St Margaret, to Tasmania. This is the first riding pony colt sold to Tasmania. As a foal, “Woody” won the best foal at the Canterbury Breeders’ Show and the foal class at Oxford, his mother being champion mare on both occasions. ** . « The Trusteebank Canterbury team for this evening’s Rutherford Cup event is Cynthia Preece and Beat the Bullet, Mark Crean and Missouri, Richard Hampton and Rich Hill, and lan Bell on Mprgan. The event will be held at the A. and P. Show.

New Zealand-based riders will be trying for their certificate of capability at the AMG three-day event at McLeans Island on November 22-24, watched by Vicompte Jurien de la Graviere, chairman of the F.E.L three-day event committee. Tinks Pottinger, Trudy Boyce, and Judith Charleston earned their certificates at Gawler, but the former will be trying to get one on Graphic, too, so he can be listed as her reserve horse.

The Newmans squad to train under the team coach, Lockie Richards, will be announced after the event. Mark Todd will be there, and will be advising the selectors on the standard of competition both in New Zealand and in Britain, to help them establish relativity between the riders and those based in Britain. Ross Renwick will also be watching, but Andrew Nicholson has a ride on Angela Davies’ Paramount. Andrew Scott will also be competing, on Marges Knighton’s Muir of Ord, so there will be some interesting new combinations in action.

Captain Mark Phillips will also be present, along with a number of other visitors, in-

eluding Charlie Micklem and Polly Schwerdt from Britain, and lan Greenshields from Australia. Mark Todd will also be at the inaugural New Zealand young rider championship at Wellington on December 1, run over a new course at Queen Elizabeth II Park at Paekakar-' iki. • * • Results of the event held on Labour Day by the Christchurch Driving Club at Leeston were:— Cone driving. — Ponies: Tracey Richards’ Katushka Charitee 1, Lucy Giles’ Wardendale Petina Lass 2, Barbara Short’s Highwayman 3.
