Inner harbour moorings
Sir,—The general manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board continues his rebuttal of criticism of harbour reclamation, but begs the question of the destruction of sheltered water in the inner harbour. On what grounds has the board concluded that berths in protected water are no longer necessary? Could the engineers remind their board of the enormous practical problems and astronomical cost of building solid-fill breakwaters should sheltered water be found necessary in the future? This reckless destruction of the only safe water in Lyttelton Harbour must not proceed. — Yours, etc., lAN TRELEAVEN. November 12, 1985.
