Rakaia Walkway

Sir,—The Lands and Survey Department is to be congratulated for the creation of that marvellous family walk, the Rakaia Walkway. On Saturday a group of us ranging from pre-school to retirement age took the jet boat to the half-way point and tramped a leisurely one and a half hours back to the Rakaia bridges. The Rakaia River is quiet, shallow and ideal for swimming on hot days. The jet boat has life jackets for all, twoway radio, fire extinguishers and is a safe, comfortable way to travel Canterbury’s braided rivers. All parts of the walkway are clearly marked and the old coal mines barred. Families with a preschooler should not be dissuaded,

but a baby back-carrier is recommended. Older children from 10 upwards may like to walk the long way round. In these days of bored glue-sniffing youth it is to be hoped that more families will take their children on safe stimulating outdoor adventures such as walkways provide. — Yours, etc., JULIENNE S. LAW. November 10, 1985.
