Junta trial near end
NZPA-Reuter Buenos Aires
Military prosecutors began final arguments yesterday in the court-martial of 16 senior Argentinian officers who led the country to defeat in 1982 against Britain over the Falkland Islands.
Defence Ministry sources said that the prosecution would probably ask the Supreme Military Tribunal to jail the former President, Lieutenant-General Leopoldo Galtieri, and the former Navy commander, Admiral Jorge Anaya, for 12 years, and the former Air Force commander, Briga-dier-General Basilio Lami Dozo for 10 years.
The sentences would include the stripping of their rank and their expulsion from the armed forces, the sources said.
General Galtieri, Admiral Anaya and Brigadier Lami Dozo, the three members of the military junta that ordered the occupation of the disputed islands, are charged with 13 other officers, including Captain Alfredo Astiz who commanded troops on South Georgia. Britain held Captain Astiz briefly after he surrendered but rejected requests by France and Sweden that he be questioned over the disappearances of French and Swedish citizens during military rule. The Ministry sources said the prosecutor would recommend that Captain Astiz be acquitted on charges of surrendering without putting up sufficient resistance. The final stage of the court-martial is being held in camera because evidence includes military diplomatic secrets.
