Softball struggle

The Dalgety Crown Travel women’s softball twilight competition started last evening at Middleton park in atrocious conditions. The competition, unlike the men’s twilight, is not part of regular play and comprises A grade sides, a number of B grade teams, along with Technical (Ashburton). The latter is likely to provide some strong opposition to the top teams. ' The format is unusual in that a handicap system operates within the regulation match. Teams such as Robert Brown Albion, the top seed, will be giving up to eight runs in one match,‘while when it meQts arch rival Burnside it

will be giving one run. After an 11 innings marathon on Saturday, Kereru and Monowai met again with Kereru reversing the result, taking the regulation game, 86, and the handicap game, 11-6. The closest’encounter of the evening was the match between Technical and Clarity Press Papanui, the latter taking a two-run advantage into the match.

The regulation score finished at 6-4 in Technical’s favour. The handicap game was tied. The Suburbs-United match was a one sided affair with Suburbs walking away with an 11-5 victory — 11-7 on handicap.f.; -y
