Pakistan XI wraps up test series

NZPA-AFP Karachi Pakistan wrapped up the series against Sri Lanka when it completed an easy 10-wicket victory, with well over a day to spare, in the third and final test at Karachi.

After a rest day, the Sri Lankans could add only 14 runs to their total of 216 for eight — and a target of 98 runs for victory was never going to tax the Pakistanis. But if the Pakistanis had no trouble on the field there were problems off it, with police firing teargas shells outside the stadium to disperse demonstrators protesting against the allegedly “forced” retirement of the star batsman, Zaheer Abbas, from test

Zaheer, who had intended to retire from the test scene after the series, said he had been pressured by influential members of the Pakistan Cricket Board to withdraw from the match.

Sri Lanka lasted just 26 minutes, the time it took the off-spinner, Tauseef Ahmed, to B” i off the tail end and with figures of five for 54 from 23.2 overs.

The openers, Mudassar Nazar, leading the side in the absence of the injured Javed Miandad and Imran Khan, made 57 and Mohsin Khan 36 to see Pakistan home 10 minutes before the lunch interval. Pakistan thus took the series 2-0.
