Another death at ‘tapu house’
PA Auckland A fourth person has died in the “tapu-stricken” Grey Lynn house where three infants died mysteriously within 25 days earlier this year. Peter Ripi Wilson, aged 47, grand-uncle of the three children who died in February, suffered a stroke and died in the back yard of the Great North Road house.
His sister-in-law, Mrs Queenie Mahara, said there was no obvious link with the tapu on the house, but it could not be ruled out.
“He had gone back to boozing,” she said, “possibly due to the grief over the earlier deaths.”
Mrs Mahara said that after two tapu-lifting ceremonies the ,f evil” had been taken away. But the memories of the deaths still stayed with the extended family living there and for that reason they intended to leave as soon as possible.
The Auckland Coroner, Mr Stephen Osborne, found that the three children all died from obscure reasons, and police investigating the deaths could not find any cause.
The three — Kataraina Tuivailala, aged four months, Nooroa Jason Tumaki, 11 months, and Delphina Wilson, two - were members of the extended family.
