Honour Bright’s honest qualities could pay off in Guineas today

By

J. J. BOYLE

The admirably efficient work rate of Honour Bright in early-season races argues of a talent that could achieve victory for him in his quest for the richest of three-year-old spring prizes, the $120,000 Feltex New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, at Riccarton today. A worthy winner of the Wellington Guineas, second in the Wanganui Guineas, third in the Winstone (Great Northern) Guineas, fourth in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, each time with the frontrunning powerhouse Avon’s Lord in the line-up, that’s the Honour Bright record amongst his contemporaries at 1600 metres.

He outfinished and out-

gamed Avon’s Lord after a speed duel up front in the Trentham classic, but in today’s race in which he will start from No. 1, Maree Lyndon has every chance to make fewer demands on his early speed, and find a snug trailing position for him.

Takanini’s Star Board might be left with the pacemaking. He drew wide and Jim Walker seems likely to tap some of the Takanini chestnut’s sharp early speed to get in closer touch with the inside rail. How Star Board meets the pressure of the final stages of the race could depend largely on whether he remains free of a foot “niggle” that affected his performance when a well-beaten second behind

Random Chance at Rangiora on Labour Day. Auckland has a second worthy runner in Bonecrusher. He struck traffic problems on the way to his third, a head and a neck from the winner in the 1400 m Winstone Guineas Trial, won by Honour Bright. Then he ran second in the Winstone Guineas, beating Honour Bright by a short neck for that position. Bonecrusher’s connections passed over the Wellington Guineas, and he will be a month away from his last race when he is switched to left-handed racing for his biggest test so far today. Blue Kingdom and Oasis Onassis earned starts in the classic with recent wins for

Waikato stables. Oasis Onassis was running against lesser lights at Ellerslie two starts back, but his performance to win over 1400 m by the wide margin of seven lengths in Imin 22.72 s was something to wonder at.

If the South Island is to get into the act, the Winga-tui-trained raffle colt Random Chance will be looked on to supply the spearhead. He won in style against Star Board and company over the Guineas distance at Rangiora, and could have improved more with that race than some of his more precocious North Island rivals have done in their recent starts.

Random Chance is by

Three Legs from a daughter of Sobig, and runs for the stable of Brian Anderton and Graeme Offen, who have made some successful raids on Riccarton. North Island stables will not have weight of numbers in the South Australian Jockey Club Handicap, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double, but the South Island’s best might still struggle to contain the Foxton trained Ten Winks.

This seven-year-old from the Busuttin stable looked close to winning form when third behind Noble Note and Mishare over 1600 m in the Jockey Club Handicap on Saturday.

Ten Winks won six races last season, all of them

beyond 1600 m, and after two starts this time round she should be thoroughly fitted for today’s 2000 m test. Ten Winks’ stablemate, Page Boy, will get his chance today in the Churchill Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble. Page Boy won this race a year ago, and distinguished himself on the second day of the 1983 New Zealand Cup meeting by winning the Members Handicap at the expense of Noble Note and others.

Noble Note wil oppose Page Boy again today, and after his win on Saturday appears to be the strongest of the South Island chances on his home course, where he has now had 10 victories.
