P.O. charges increase predicted
PA Wellington Post Office charges will increase because of the Government’s decision to impose taxation, the Opposition spokesman on the Post Office, Mr Roger Maxwell, has said. The Income Tax Amendment Bill (No. 5), introduced in Parliament on Thursday, includes provision for the imposition of taxation on Post Office and airport authorities.
Mr Maxwell said Post Office charges would rise dramatically because of the legislation. “$lOB million has been allowed for in the annual report for the year ending March 31, 1985,” he said. This represented 34 per cent for the Post Office profit for the year. “If the new provisions were in force the taxation liability would have been $l5B million. “This calculation is based on the new proposed rate of tax of 48c in the dollar,” Mr Maxwell said.
He said the public would have to pay higher charges because the Government wanted to siphon more revenue out of the Post Office.
