Building standard to help disabled
PA Wellington Better access for the disabled to new buildings is the aim of a building standard approved by the Minister of
Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus. The new standard provided clear rules on the provision of lifts in twostorey and three-storey buildings, Mrs Hercus said. “This is probably the single most contentious issue in this whole area,” she said.
“Car-parking, toilet facilities, and access to units in hotels, motels and other accommodation are also going to be more obstacle-free.” The new standard is the result of a two-year review. The Social Welfare Department would work with the Disabled Persons Assembly and the Standards Association on a publicity campaign to raise general public awareness of the needs of the disabled, Mrs Hercus said.
