Support for examiner idea
Wellington reporter
Most submissions made to the Government so far support its proposal to set up an independent examiner of police practices. The Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, said the support was for the concept of a mechanism and not for any particular mechanism suggested.
This came after a discussion paper put out last February. The original deadline of June has since been extended as organisations beyond the list of 125 to which the paper was sent have indicated their wish to be involved. Some of the later submissions have been from Maori groups who felt they were not represented adequately
by other Maori organisations to which the dicussion paper was sent.
Mrs Hercus denied that she has been written to by the Auckland Council for Civil Liberties and Wellington Committee on Racism and Discrimination criticising her for lack of consultation or racial bias.
