Cricket triumph: records tumble
New Zealand’s historic test cricket victory over Australia in Brisbane yesterday will prompt a rewriting of its record books. In terms of both team and individual performances in the test, won in thoroughly emphatic fashion by an innings and 41 runs, this was New Zealand’s finest display overseas. It is New Zealand’s twenty-second test win, its third with an innings to spare; its third over Australia, and the first over Australia on Australian soil. The outstanding achievement of Richard Hadlee further strengthens his claim as one of test cricket’s greatest bowlers. His match analysis of 15 for 123 is comfortably the best by a New Zealander, and only three bowlers have taken more wickets in a test — Jim Laker (England, 19 for 90, v. Australia at Manchester, 1956); Sidney Barnes (England, 17 for 159, v. South Africa, Johannesburg, 1913-14); and Bob Massie (Australia, 16 for 137, v. England at Lord’s, 1972). Only Laker has taken more wickets in a test innings than Hadlee’s nine for 52 in the first innings. New Zealand’s score of 553 for seven declared was its highest total in test cricket, surpassing 551 for nine declared at Lord’s, 12 years ago. The partnership of/ 224 between John Reid ' and Martin Crowe was the best by New Zealand for the third wicket against any country, eclipsing the 222 (unbroken) of Bert Sutcliffe and John Reid at Delhi in 1955. Reid’s sixth test century leaves him trailing only Bevan Congdon and Glenn Turner, who scored seven each, as New Zealand’s most prolific centurymaker., / . For Jeremy Coney, the win is his first, as captain. His personal contribution .was tb take four: catches, ; eluding ' wicket-keepers) in tests. Match report, back page
