Masks for rescuers
PA Auckland Plastic masks will be issued to Auckland surf clubs to reduce the risk of members contracting A.1.D.5., the Auckland LifeSaving Association has decided. A spokesman for the Piha Surf Life-Saving Club said yesterday, “Most people will think that we have been caught up in the A.I.D.S. hysteria, but we are only taking precautionary measures.” Rescuers saw good hygienic value in using a mask, he said. Another club member said, “It is very common for people to vomit while we are giving mouth-to-mouth, because they have swallowed a lot of sea water. “There is also a big risk of catching hepatitis B, or a venereal disease.”
