Tobacco issue upsets Dr Hay

Dr David Hay, medical director of the National Heart Foundation, said he was disappointed that the Sport Development Inquiry Committee made no specific recommendation on the issue of tobacco sponsorship in sport.

“The report said it was up to individual sports organisations to decide whether to accept sponsorship from tobacco and alcohol companies and that the Government should decide by legislation whether sponsorship of sport by tobacco and liquor companies should be permitted,” he said.

The report said that excellence in sport and the promotion of health were incompatible ’with tobacco and liquor, said Dr Hay.

“I welcome '-the report’s emphasis on the need for daily physical education in schools. The foundation has been concerned for sometime about 'the runningdown of physical education in schools.

“A lot of the recommendations will need more money but it would worry the foundation to see a large part of the funding coming from products which ■ do not promote health,” Dr Hay said.
