Mandela vows to defy Govt
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg
A South African black nationalist leader, Winnie Mandela, has challenged the Government, vowing to defy an order to return to internal exile by Friday. Mrs Mandela, wife of a jailed black leader, Nelson Mandela, said yesterday that she would not return to Brandfort, in the Orange Free State, to where she was banished by Government decree in 1977.
A senior police officer said that she had until Friday to comply with the order.
Mrs Mandela moved from Brandfort back to the family home in Soweto, the black city near Johannesburg, after her house in Brandfort was burned down in August. She has spent the last few days in Cape Town with her husband, who is recovering
from prostate gland surgery.
He has been in prison for over 20 years after being convicted on sabotage and plotting revolution charges and is due to return to jail to continue his life sentence when the doctors pronounce him fit.
Mrs Mandela, when asked yesterday if she would return to Brandfort, said, “Not at all. I will go home to Soweto. I will do what everyone does and go home. I am a homing pigeon.” Asked if she expected to be arrested for defying her banishment order, she replied, “I think they (the authorities) will arrest me. They are free to take the law into their hands.” She is both banished and banned, a uniquely South African punishment for political opponents who cannot be legally quoted in the South African press.
