$160,000 for standardbreds
The inaugural unreserved New Zealand Cup Standardbred Sale realised a total of $160,000 from 81 lots, an average of $1975, at the Addington Showgrounds yesterday. The auctioneer, Wrightson Bloodstock, Ltd, was
“thrilled” with the result of the sale, which replaced a similar sale, formerly held at Ashburton. “This was a 300 per cent improvement on Ashburton,” said Mr Paul Davies, of Wrightson Bloodstock, following the sale. The top yearling colt in the sale was Caton’s Bay
(Smooth Fella—Pacing Kambba), a half-brother to Uncle Hoki (Imin 56.85, three wins from three starts in North America). However, the colt was repurchased by the vendor, the Estate of M. S. Macpherson, for $17,500. The top-selling broodmare was Dame Castleton (Some Evander—Castleton’s Queen), a five-year-old halfsister to Sir Castleton, which was sold to Mr J. Berry, of Te Awamutu, for $13,000; while Castleton Royale, a two-year-old daughter of Yankee Reb and the former fine winner, Miss Castleton (sister to Sir Castleton and half-sister to Castleton’s Pride) was knocked down to Mr K. A. Falconer, of Central Otago, for $12,000. Others to sell for $4OOO or more were: It’s Blitz (Last Edition—Petulus mare), $5000; Kai Tere (Stormyway—Bashful mare), $4000; Odette (Noodlum— Cardigan Belle mare), $4200; Castleton’s Dream (Game Pride—
Margaret Castleton filly), $5000; Madam Castleton (Game Pride—Lady Castleton filly), $5000; and Castleton’s Prince (Yankee Reb— Margaret Castleton colt), $4OOO. Seventeen of the 98 lots were withdrawn. Six lots were repurchased by their vendors. Mrs Margaret Macpherson and the Estate of M. S. Macpherson were the leading vendors, selling 12 lots for $56,750.
