Freightman on target for N.Z. Cup qualification

By

G. K. YULE

Freightman looks set to take the final step to a start in the $225,000 Toyota New Zealand Cup on November 12 with a win in the Industrial Painters Handicap at Addington Raceway this evening.

Twelve months ago Freightman just failed to beat Camelot in the Canterbury Park Club’s first leg of the double, with the latter going on to take the Cup the following month.

Combined course and T.A.B. treble

Patrons at Addington Raceway this evening will be able to invest on-course on the T.A.B. treble. The Canterbury Park club has changed the races normally used for the first on-course treble to races three, four and five, the same events as those for the T.A.B. treble. The club thinks that it will be an attraction for patrons to have their investments included in what is normally a six-figure pool, with the possibility of a dividend greater than that normally associated with an on-course treble.

This time Freightman comes in on 10m after his dashing win over Mighty Me in the Lord Module Supporters’ Handicap at Motukarara on October 12 at his most recent start. The manner in which he fought on for that victory suggested that the extra 400 m in this race will suit him even better. Lord Louie heralded early success when he came on strongly for fifth at Motukarara, by far his best effort this season. Like a number of Cup contenders Lord Louie needs to show worthwhile form to be cer-

tain of a start in the big staying test. He will not be set an easy task from 20m, but it will surprise if he fails to get into the finish. Spry Joker, like Freightman needs just one more victory to earn a start in the Cup. He has caused his trainer, Jack Carmichael, some problems lately as a result of his failure to begin cleanly. He has drawn No. 1 on 10m, not necessarily the best position for a tardy beginner. However, he is in such great heart at present that he cannot be left out of calculations.

Likely Lord is back to a

distance more to his liking than the 2200 m at Motukarara. That was his first start since he suffered a setback early in September and the run is certain to have improved him. His racing at the national meeting in August points to him being better than an outside chance.

Camelot, winner of the race from 20m last year, will start from 40m this time. He will be set a difficult assignment, but should there be any loitering in the middle part, he might not be far away. Hands Down, from 45m, is

the backmarker with a remarkable record on the course. He, too, could get into the finish, with Ruthless, Lew Foy and Lady El, all on the front, quite capable of bold runs.

Loveridge, Nardinski and Greg Patron will be leading chances in the second leg, the J.J.’s Cornell Handicap. They can expect to receive more than token opposition from two Southland challengers in Malaz, a stylish winner at Invercargill in track record time on October 5, and Titan Chip, unbeaten in three starts this season.
