Australia All sectors boom

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets surged through the 1050-point mark to their fourth consecutive record, led by BHP, but with strong support for all sectors, brokers said. They said rises were fuelled by a shortage of scrip plus a string of positive signals, including new-found confidence in the mining sector and the morning’s lower-than-expected consumer price index figures. Heavy trading of BHP shares and options dominated business with the expiry yesterday of the BHP October options series. A total 12.1 M shares changed bands as the stock finned 14c to 9.04. Among other leaders, Bell Resources rose 20c to 1070, Peko and Bougainville both added 4c to 564 and 209 respectively, MIM rose 8c to 275, but CSR eased 5c to 367. Pioneer Concrete stood out amid a string of special sales on industrial and mining boards, with 2.7 M shares traded as the price firmed 2c to 255.

Queensland Press was the subject of a number of late special sales at 1050, a leap of 130, on turnover of 500,000 shares. Elsewhere, Bell Group rose 30c to 1180, FAI 50c to 2200, Industrial Equity 16c to 696, Howard Smith 16c to 626, Fairfax 10c to 780 and Herald and Weekly Times 10c to 580. Lend Lease shed 10c to 690 and Adsteam 10c to 1050. A coal miner, Austen and Butta, attracted attention with a special sale in Melbourne of IM shares at 285, up sc.
