Irish festivities
More than 500 members of the New Zealand Irish Society will meet at a national feis (gathering) in Christchurch at the weekend. The feis will cover many aspects of Irish cultural and sporting life. The Colleen of the Year will also be chosen tomorrow evening at the society’s hall in St Asaph Street. Five contestants, aged between 16 and 18, have entered from Auckland. Wellington, Lower
Hutt, Christchurch, and Invercargill. Tomorrow afternoon Irish sports such as hurling and Gaelic football will be played. The society’s dancing competitions will also be held throughout the long week-end, including the Ulster Cup which will be held at the Christchurch Town Hall on Sunday. Pool, darts, and bowls will feature at the society’s clubrooms in Domain Terrace on Sunday.
