Black and white

Sir,—Having spent a fair amount of time and effort in disproving the popular belief that the Americans are pure white and the Russians hellish black (as the Americans claim), I do not want to enter on a crusade to disprove the opposite (as the Russians and M.

Creel claim). The N.A.T.O. reply to Resolution 38/75 is that rejecting nuclear war would expose N.A.T.O. to a Russian attack on western Europe with conventional arms, in which the latter is superior (I quote the argument without necessarily subscribing to it). In “N.Z. Politics in the Nuclear Age” I pointed out the more fundamental reasons for the mutual super-Power distrust — historical, economic, nationalistic. I am certainly not convinced of the sincerity of either side. I can only prophesy that there will be ho allocation of guilt after the next war.—Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. October 22, 1985.
