Christmas mail
Sir,—l cannot understand the fuss caused by Christmas surface mail arriving early, presumably by air. I received a surface mail packet this month, a mere week after it was posted in Canada, with the sender’s pious hopes that it would arrive before 1986 was too far gone. I was delighted to have my Christmas spun out by early remembrances, rather than having everything at one gulp. Or else wondering, if the mail is delayed, whether it has been lost or pilfered in transit — a real risk with surface mail. So if you have an early windfall or airlift for the price of a long sea trip, enjoy it. It is a happier reminder of festivities to come than the exhortations from retailers to buy now for Christmas — Yours, etc., ALICE DOOLE. Tuamarina, October 23, 1985.
