Hay’s strong hand at Addington

By

G.K. YULE

The Ashburton trainer-horseman, John Hay, will have a great chance of winning both heats of the Lion Brown Pace, the feature events at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway this evening.

Hay will drive the Southland colt, Captain Cavalla, in the first heat and will continue his association with the Mid-Canterbury gelding, Keystone Surprise, in the second.

The plum drive on Trident, a stablemate of Captain Cavalla, has gone to Kerry O’Reilly, and this combination will be the one most likely to test Keystone Surprise in the second heat.

The Noodlum colt, Laser Lad, will have to overcome a second-line draw in the first heat. However, he was so impressive when he beat Sir Alba in a heat of the Sires’ Stakes Series- at Ashburton on September 28 that the task might not be beyond him. Captain Cavalla recorded Imin 59.8 s when he won a heat run at Addington on October 2, well inside the

2min 2s returned by Laser Lad.

Laser Lad looked likely to improve immensely as a result of his race at Ashburton. His awkward draw has not proved insurmountable to others in the past and the extra 400 m in this race should suit him.

Captain Cavalla, too, should manage the extra distance. He should have benefited from his two starts and there might not be much between him and Laser Lad. The consistent Uncle Alex looks sound staying material, this being emphasised by his win at Motukarara last Saturday. He should again be hard to beat.

Spring Feeling and Borderline should be the pick of the others.

Keystone Surprise showed tremendous potential when

he won at Addington on August 17 at his lone race start He has gone well at trials recently and should be more than a match for Trident.

Dream Lustre, one of the more consistent spring three-year-olds, Lederec and Consolation are others expected to race prominently. Skipper Dale, trying for his fifth successive win, will be a firm favourite for the Max Bowden Standardbreds Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Most opposition to him might come from Andronicus and Vicki McQuade, but consideration must also be given to the chances of Smarty Pants, Motu Jodi and Gold and Black.

Simon David, trained by John Hay, Happy Rose and Lively Too form a likely trio for the second leg, the Carpet Mill Products Pace.
