New tennis hero
Kelly Evernden, a fairly new player to the circuit, has won himself a place of second seed in New Zealand for tennis after Chris Lewis. He played extremely well in the first singles match against Korea but said: “I don’t think I played as well as I could have.”
He played his doubles match against Korea the next day with Russell Simpson as his partner, the former second seed. A short while after they had started the first set, they were leading 5-2, but they lost concentration and finally lost that set to Korea 7-5.
But they gave it all they had in the second, third and fourth sets and won 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, and with Simpson serving well as usual, it was an upset for Korea.
New Zealand was now leading three games to love, which meant they had won the match, but they still played the reverse singles and won again, which took them into the big league stuff.
A reporter asked him who he would like to play next year, and Kelly replied: “It doesn’t worry me, but I’d like to beat U.S.A, in the finals.”
