Call for 25% dollar drop

A fall in the New Zealand dollar of up to 25 per cent is needed to provide the “blood transfusion” farming requires, according to the Opposition spokesman on agriculture, Mr lan McLean.

The Government could get the dollar down by reducing borrowing and by lowering the exchange rate, he said.

“A drop of 10c to 15c would be a blood transfusion for farmers and also exporters.” The $2OO million farm relief package announced by the Government was only treating the problem with “band aid” measures. >

Even a small drop of the New Zealand dollar against the United States dollar would help fanners, said Mr McLean.

Drought relief measures for farmers also needed to be improved, he said. Farmers with little or no equity needed help to stay on the land or help to get off it.

“Now they are in limbo,” said Mr McLean.

Loans would be written off for fanners who sold their farms within three years under the Government’s package but this was not long enough, he said.
