Maori failing lashed
PA Wellington Failing Maori students who take Maori language as a subject for School Certificate is the same as failing them as Maoris, according to the Mana Motuhake education spokesman, Mr Amster Reedy. Mr Reedy said Maori should not be a subject for school examinations, and people who took it should be assessed in a marae context on their attitudes towards the Maori culture, and their ability to communicate in the language. Mr Reedy said the fact that it was an examination subject and that according to the latest Education Department statistics candidates who sat Maori had a considerably lower success rate than those taking other languages, pointed to the fact that the education system did not recognise and appreciate Maori values. “The examination is just a blanket test,” he said. “It tells nothing about a child’s love of the culture. What business is it of the examination system?”
