M.P. to lead delegation of youngsters to China
PA Wellington The member of Parliament for Eden, Mr Richard Northey, will lead a delegation of 60 young New Zealanders on a 10-day visit to China next month.
The delegation, which has been selected from a range of youth organisations, leaves New Zealand on November 13.
The visit is in response to an invitation made by the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Yaobang, during a visit to New Zealand earlier this year. All costs will be met by the Chinese Government. The group will visit three
Chinese cities — Beijung, Xian (a former capital and the site of the world famous Terracotta Warriors) and Guangzhou (a main city near the area from which most of New Zealand’s Chinese community trace their links). The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said the visit would introduce China and its development programmes to a good cross-section of New Zealand youth. That augured well for the future of New Zealand/ China relations. “The exchanges of this type do much to promote the friendship and under-
standing between our two countries and people,” he said. Members of the delegation include: Ms Carolyn Risk, Christchurch, Youth Advisory Committee; Mr lan P. Gardiner, Blenheim, Scouts Association; Mr David H. Rea, Palmerston North, Massey University; Ms Nicola J. Fife, Christchurch 1, Canterbury University, Ms Karen J. Wilson, Canterbury, Lincoln College; Ms Mary A. Davison, Dunedin, Otago University, Mr Michael P. Moore, Rangiora, Christchurch; Ms Amirio A. Reriti, Christchurch, Waipounamu; Mr Gordon Wong, Dunedin, N.Z. Chinese Association; Ms Leichelle A. Tanoa, Christchurch, Teacher Trainees Association.
