Waitikiri at full strength

Two big victories by Waitikiri in the double round of the Woodward Cup interclub golf competition at Templeton tomorrow could leave the team in an unassailable position to start the final two rounds at Russley on October 20. Waitikiri, the 1983 champion, has the perfect score of five points after five of the . nine rounds, and has a two-point lead over five clubs. It also has a handy lead in individual games. The championship has gone well so far for Waitikiri’s non-playing captain, Ken Cowles, but he said yesterday that the side was not going to rest on its

laurels. “As far as we are concerned it is back to square one. We consider that we are starting again and have four games to win to take the trophy. We certainly want to consolidate with two wins on Sunday,” he said. The Waitikiri team will be at full strength, with the return of the unbeaten pair, John McCormick and David Cochrane, both of whom missed the last two rounds.

They were competing in the national inter-services event and both made the New Zealand team, McCormick winning the police tournament.

Waitikiri’s two opponents tomorrow, Russley, in the sixth found, and Harewood, in the afternoon, have solid sides and have compared favourably with Waitikiri in recent years. Russley lost tight contests in the last two years, but before that had won three in a row, while Harewood drew in 1982 and again when Waitikiri won the championship. A good duel can be expected when Waitikiri’s top player, Paul Minifie, meets his fellow Canterbury representative, Mark Street (Harewood), the competition’s best-performed No. 1 this season, in the afternoon.
