FM conversion approved

PA Wellington The Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Hunt, has given the Broadcasting Corporation the go-ahead for a $700,000 conversion of its Concert Programme from AM transmitters to a national FM network.

The approval covered FM transmitters and associated equipment for the Concert Programme transmissions from Wellington and Christchurch, he said. : * ■ The B.C.N.Z. already has an FM transmitter which it will be able to make available for the programme in Auckland.

The purchase , of this equipment would go a long

way towards freeing up the YC-AM network for coverage of sports events, Parliament and educational and cultural broadcasting services for minority groups, said Mr Hunt. “I look forward to the day when the inevitable competition, during summer, between listeners to the Concert Programme and sports roundup will be a thing of the past.” w . Broadcasting Tribunal warrants for those and the associated Young Adult FM transmitters would be required, and the B.C.N.Z. could not yet predict likely commissioning dates, Mr Hunt said.
